About Regions
Anzère
lies on a sunny terrace at 1500m above the Rhone Valley,
only 15 kilometres from Sitten, the capital of the canton. It emerged as a
winter sports centre in the 1960s but, with its beautiful views over the Rhone Valley
and the Valais Alps, Anzère is also wonderful walking country in summer with
interesting tours along historical irrigation channels known as suonen.
Anzère is part of the central Valais community
of Ayent at the foot of the Wildhorn massif. It nestles amidst larch and pine
forests and enjoys an almost Mediterranean micro-climate.
Anzère is still a young resort: before 1960 it was simply a collection of five
small chalets. Thanks to its favoured location, Anzère quickly grew to become a
modern but compact holiday village. The surrounding countryside is dotted with
alpine huts, usually built in stone or timber toasted a rich brown by the sun.
Because the Ayent-Anzère occupies such a sunny location and has one of the
driest climates in Switzerland,
farmers in the region have constructed a network of suonen, the irrigation
channels ('Bisses' in French) so typical of the Valais. Three main suonen, 70
km in length, traverse the community. The first suonen date from the middle of
the 15th century, and there is an interesting little suonen museum in Anzère.
The ski region stretches from altitudes of 1500
m to 2500 m. There are 12 lift facilities and a wide range of courses and
trails for downhill and cross-country skiers, snowboarders and winter hikers.
Toboggan enthusiasts will find a super toboggan run, and there are plenty of
opportunities for winter hikers and snowshoe walkers. Every week mulled wine is
ladled out of a huge cauldron, providing a chance to make new friends.
Anzère in summer is ideal for mountain bikes (5
routes, 80 km). It also offers climbing, riding, fishing, a hang-gliding
school, mountain huts, tennis courts, a heated open-air and indoor pool,
mini-golf, beach volleyball and a giant children's playground. Close by are
wine cellars, golf courses, thermal baths and an observatory.
Ñrans-Montana is
another of Switzerland's big, world-famous ski resorts, occupying what is
claimed to be the sunniest plateau in the Alps, facing south over the Rhône
valley with a spectacular panorama of peaks yawning beyond.
The resort actually comprises three villages, Crans-sur-Sierre, Montana
and, out on a limb, Aminona.
The ski slopes stretch from the high plateau up
to the Plaine Morte Glacier at 3000 m. Directly beyond the edge of the forest
the pistes are broad and open, ideal for beginners and deep-snow skiers.
Advanced skiers will take the chairlift to La Toula to find a really
challenging descent. Particularly popular are the broad carving pistes and the
valley descent down the Piste Nationale which, at 12 km, is the longest in the
region.
In winter the golf courses become a paradise for cross-country skiers and
hikers. In addition to classic cross-country ski trails, there is also an extra
piste especially for skaters.
In addition to well-known sports like hiking,
tennis and squash, Crans-Montana has facilities for canyoning, mountain
climbing, water skiing and paragliding. The attractive skiing areas of the
Plaine Morte glacier plateau are also ideal for summer hiking. Particular
summer favourites are the five swimming lakes right next to the village.
Crans-Montana has a long golfing tradition. The 18-hole Severiano Ballesteros
Golf Course with its breath-taking views is situated on the high plateau of
Crans. The international elite meet here every year for golfing tournaments.
