Greece has perfect geographical
position and that is why since ancient times it has been the most important
advantage of the country. Greece
is located in the middle of Mediterranean Sea, between Asia and Italy, close to Egypt,
Libya
and other Balkan countries. Greece
is bordered with Albania, the
Former Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria
and Turkey.
Total area of Greek peninsular is 132 sq.km. The
country's abundant natural landscape is presented with thousands of indented
coasts, imposing rocky massifs, caves, gorges, lakes, rivers, biotopes of
spectacular beauty and unique natural habitats- coupled with the mild climate.
Greece consists of a mountainous
peninsular mainland jutting out into the sea at the southern end of the Balkans, the Peloponnesus peninsula (separated from the
mainland by the canal of the Isthmus of Corinth),
and numerous islands. The biggest Greek islands
are: Crete, Euboea, Lesbos, Chios,
the Dodecanese and the Cycladic groups of the Aegean Sea as well as the Ionian Sea islands. Four fifths of Greece consists of mountains and hills, making
the country one of the most mountainous in Europe.
Western Greece contains a number of lakes and
wetlands and it is dominated by the Pindus mountain range. The most famous mountains are:
Olympus- is the highest mountain point in Greece;
Parnitha- is the mountain range; Pelion mountains and Ochi mountains situated
on the southern part of Euboea
Island. Aliakmon is the
longest river in Greece
(almost 300 km). There are more than 20 lakes in Greece. Greece is very rich in olive,
orange, oak, pine, fig trees, olives, pomegranates and grapes.
