Piraeus is situated in the Saronic Gulf
bay and it is the main port of Athens since ancient times. Piraeus became very powerful in V B.C. when it was connected with Athens by the Long Walls reaching
its biggest splendor, and the Themistoclean Walls were completed.
As
a result Piraeus flourished and became a port of high security with a great
commercial activity, and a city throbbing with life. The original town of
Piraeus was planned by the architect Hippodamus of Miletus in the famous grid system
that he devised, probably in the time of Pericles. The town was captured in 85
B.C. by Romans and later it was totally destroyed by the Roman Lucius Cornelius
Sulla in 86 B.C. Greek state was formed in the 19th century with the
population of 50 people in Piraeus. When Piraeus became the main port of the
country, its development started.
Nowadays
Piraeus is the biggest sea and trade port of Mediterranean. It is possible to
reach all the habited Greek islands and different countries. Piraeus is situated
in 10 km from downtown of Athens and is connected with the capital by bus and
metro transportation.
Here you will be
surprised by seeing interesting private residences in neoclassical style and
modern buildings. During summer time you can visit Castela Theatre and in winter you can go to the State Piraeus Theatre.
Business and
touristic areas in Piraeus are it`s bays, such as: Mikrolimano, Pasalimani,
Zea, Freatida and Hatzikiriakio.
There are a lot
of Greek taverns where they will offer you a wide choice of fish, seafood,
meat, fresh vegetable and fruits. For sure you will enjoy sea breeze and
picturesque sea view with numerous boats and yachts.
There is also Archeological and Sea Museums that are worth visiting. The most interesting exhibit items of Archeological Museum is Athina Statue and Apollon Statue that were built in 525
B.C.
